Coordinates are determined according to the east-west for x-axis north-south for y-axis, and up-down for the z-axis displacements from the origin. The Cartesian coordinate system is based on three mutually perpendicular coordinate axes: the x-axis, the y-axis, and the z-axis, See Figure 6 below.
Given the spindle is the Z axis by definition. Z is vertical on the mill, and horizontal on the lathe. The X and Y axis are in the same 2-dimensional plane, which is perpendicular the the Z axis. X and Y axes are displaced 90 degrees from one another.
Answering the most common questions about 5-axis milling. ... Why and How of 5-Axis CNC Machining ... axis-labeling conventions: in a vertical machining center, the X- and Y-axes reside in the horizontal plane while the Z-axis resides in the vertical plane. In a horizontal machining center, the Z-axis and Y-axis are reversed. ...
These axes are normally taken so that X axis is the longitudinal axis pointing ahead, Z axis is the vertical axis pointing downwards, and the Y axis is the lateral one, …

A 4-axis simultaneous surface milling feature requires your machine to have four degrees of freedom. For FeatureCAM, the four degrees of freedom are restricted to moving in X, Y, and Z, and a rotation about the stock indexing axis (A, B, or C in the case of turn/mill).You may define 4-axis features in a turn/mill document with a tool that 'cuts from the OD'.
Mar 14, 2016· I have my long axis set as X and my short axis (gantry) as Y; so X+ moves away from you, and Y+ moves to the right. For the life of me I cannot get F360 CAM to match this. I find the axis orientation tools cumbersome to say the least.
A milling machine removes metal by rotating a multi-toothed cutter that is fed into the moving workpiece. The spindle can be fed up and down with a quill feed lever on the head. (click here for video) 656kB. The bed can also by fed in the x, y, and z axes manually. In this clip the z axis is adjusted first, then the y, than the x.
Aside from size and precision, the principal difference between these hobby-type machines and larger true vertical mills is that the X-Y table is at a fixed elevation; the Z-axis is controlled in basically the same fashion as drill press, where a larger vertical or knee mill has a vertically fixed milling head, and changes the X-Y table elevation.
X, Y, Z Zero Backlash Ball Screws with pre-loaded ball nuts to eliminate play on the table, block, and quill travels to provide precision machining. Home/Limit Switches for all extreme ends of X, Y, & Z travel allowing you to confidently test your program without having to worry about an axis traveling to its end, causing machine damage.

The part is moved very accurately by means of a table that can be controlled in two directions (X-axis = left/right and Y-axis=in/out). The third axis is provided by a vertical spindle (Z-axis) that moves up and down. The mill can be used for milling slots, holes or pockets, drilling, profiling, boring and surfacing.
CNC machines use a 3D Cartesian coordinate system. Figure 10. shows a typical Vertical Milling Center (VMC). Parts to be machined is fastened to the machine table. This table moves in the XY-Plane. As the operator faces the machine, the X-Axis moves the table left-right. The Y-Axis …

Other Y-axis machine builders generally offer machines within these travel ranges. In the Y-axis plane, tools can move in a plus or minus direction perpendicular to the Z-axis and spindle center line. Viewed from the operator's perspective, this Y-axis motion is toward or away from the door of the machine while X-axis motion is floor to ceiling.

Jul 19, 2017· There are several types of milling machines, but usually they are classified by the orientation of their spindles or the cutting head, which are positioned either horizontal or vertical. Each type of mill has its own benefits and applications depe...
Jun 03, 2014· Similarly, moving the cursor up [where the draftsman is assumed to be looking down on the drawing as if the cursor were moving away from him] the Y axis also increments positively. With that said, on my mill & probably all other vertical mills, the spindles don't move in the X & Y …

When working in a 2D coordinate system you could say that X is the horizontal axis and Y is the vertical axis.. Extending this to 3D, is there a similar word for the Z axis? (I'm aware of Width, Height and Depth, but obviously horizontal and vertical aren't synonymous to width and height, which is why I don't want to call the Z axis the depth axis.)
Dec 30, 2010· The axes on machine tools such as the lathe and mill are labeled as X, Y, and Z. X is the horizontal or side to side axis, Y is the operator to rear of machine axis or in and out, and Z is the ...
Apr 16, 2011· Each has its own display (quill on top, knee X Y Z below): You should not feed a cut using the knee, only the quill. The reason being that when you release the knee gib to permit vertical movement, the knee pulls away from the column by an unpredictable amount and in unpredictable directions relative to true X and Y axes.

Jun 02, 2010· My first experience with more than 3 Axis was on a Deckel Maho 5 Axis mill with table that could rotate 360 degrees, and a head that would go 0 - 90 (from vertical mill to horizontal mill). I knew X Y and Z of course, but could never really figure out why the table rotation was C and the head rotation was B.... i just took it as "it is what it ...
Dec 16, 2014· I am a noob here, but trying to learn fast. My first design, I didn't change the default to Z axis up... how can I fix that design so that it is correct? I have tried export/import into a new design, but even when the default is now correct, the design comes in with the Z axis wrong. X is ok, Y is up and Z is inverse of what Y should be.
